MONROE COUNTY, MI – A devastating early-morning crash on Tuesday claimed the lives of a 19-year-old mother and her infant daughter on M-50 in Monroe County. The tragedy unfolded when the young woman’s sedan veered into oncoming traffic, striking a semi-truck head-on and resulting in a scene of chaos and destruction.
The collision occurred around 8 a.m. at the crossroads of South Custer and Lewis Avenue, leaving the road closed for hours as emergency responders and police worked to extricate the severely damaged vehicle from beneath the truck. Witnesses reported significant damage to the car, with only minor damage visible on the semi.
Local resident Robbin Williams, upon hearing a loud crash, described witnessing the wreckage and the immediate response. “What I heard this morning was a big boom,” she recounted. “So I got out and looked and it looked like the car was sitting under the semi truck.”
Williams also voiced concerns about the frequent high speeds on the rural road, noting that the area has been the site of numerous severe accidents over the years, often due to drivers disregarding the traffic lights.
Law enforcement officials, including the Michigan State Police and the county sheriff’s office, responded swiftly. They are currently investigating the cause of the crash, which remains a mystery.
According to preliminary findings, neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the crash. Investigators are focused on understanding why the sedan crossed into oncoming traffic. The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old from Adrian, escaped without injury and was permitted to leave the scene.
This tragic incident adds to a history of road accidents in the area, prompting renewed calls for drivers to stay vigilant on the road and adhere to safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
