Missing woman found dead inside of her townhome

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the homicide of a woman found dead in her south Charlotte townhome as concerns rise among local residents over community safety.

The body of 32-year-old Whitney Elizabeth Hurd was discovered around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at her residence on the 5500 block of Werburgh Street in the Magnolia Park community, near Park Road at Tyvola Road. Authorities were alerted to the scene after Hurd, who had been reported missing by her family on July 11, was found dead.

Following an examination by the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office, police confirmed on Tuesday that they are treating Hurd’s death as a homicide. Efforts to locate Hurd’s white 2014 BMW X3, with North Carolina tag KJP-9368, ensued, with police successfully recovering the vehicle on Thursday morning for further processing.

According to the missing persons report, Hurd was last seen by her family at her home on July 4. It took until July 14 for detectives to enter her home, a delay that has added to the anxieties of the community.

The investigation is ongoing as detectives work to piece together the events leading up to Hurd’s tragic death. Local authorities are now calling on the public, and urge anyone with information to come forward with relevant tips.
