Missing Elderly Man Found Dead in Plantation Lake

Police found the 76-year-old in the water after his shoe was discovered during a neighborhood search Thursday morning.

PLANTATION, FL — A 76-year-old man who had been reported missing was found dead Thursday morning in a lake behind a home in Plantation, police said.

Officers responded July 30 to the area of 7800 Northwest 11th Court and began searching for the man. During the search, authorities found one of his shoes in a nearby lake, leading emergency crews to focus their efforts on the water.

The Plantation Fire Department Dive Team searched the lake with assistance from Plantation police officers and a Broward Sheriff’s Office bloodhound. The man was later found dead in the water, according to police.

Authorities did not release the man’s name. Police also had not disclosed when he was last seen, who reported him missing or how long crews searched before finding him.

Neighbors told Local 10 News that the man had lived in the area for several decades. They described him as a kind neighbor with a large family living with him.

The lake is near Northwest 11th Court and Northwest 78th Avenue in a residential area of Plantation. Police did not report any danger to other residents connected with the discovery.

Investigators have not said how the man entered the lake. His cause and manner of death also had not been released as of Friday.

Detectives were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. Police had not announced whether foul play was suspected or when the man’s identity might be made public.
