MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was recovering after a crash on Florida’s Turnpike sent him to a hospital and forced authorities to close several northbound lanes, according to the sheriff’s office and local news reports.
The crash happened Tuesday, Sept. 1, near Northwest 41st Street, before Exit 29 on the Turnpike’s Homestead Extension. The deputy, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Authorities had not announced the cause of the crash or said whether anyone would face citations or charges.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified the injured deputy as a member of its Special Response Team. Available reports reviewed after the crash did not identify him as a motorcycle officer. Authorities also said a Special Response Team vehicle seen at the scene was not involved in the collision.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported one person from the scene, and the sheriff’s office later confirmed that person was the deputy. Officials did not immediately say whether anyone else was injured or how many vehicles were involved in the crash.
Aerial and traffic-camera footage showed a large emergency response along the northbound Turnpike. At least five lanes were blocked while crews worked around damaged vehicles and cleared debris from the roadway. Traffic continued moving through a limited portion of the highway while the cleanup was underway.
Images from the scene showed a badly damaged white SUV that appeared to be a law enforcement vehicle as well as a damaged dark-colored sedan. An armored sheriff’s office vehicle was also present, but authorities said that vehicle was not part of the crash. Officials had not publicly released a full account of how the collision occurred.
The sheriff’s office said its Traffic Homicide Unit was handling the investigation. The unit investigates serious and critical traffic crashes as well as crashes involving Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office vehicles. Investigators typically document crash scenes, examine vehicles and collect statements and other evidence as they work to determine what happened.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions during the afternoon, but the blocked northbound lanes reopened several hours later after authorities cleared the scene. No additional traffic restrictions tied to the crash were reported after the roadway reopened.
As of the latest information released publicly, the deputy was in stable condition. Authorities had not released his identity, a more detailed description of his injuries or findings about what caused the crash. The investigation remained open pending additional information from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
