Police found the 32-year-old victim inside a red Hyundai after gunfire erupted early Saturday in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood.
MIAMI, FL — Detectives were investigating a street shooting Sunday after a 32-year-old man was found seriously wounded inside a red Hyundai early Saturday in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, according to police and fire rescue officials.
Police officers and emergency crews responded at about 3:30 a.m. to the area of Northwest 58th Street and Northwest 12th Avenue. Authorities said the man had been shot several times. Fire rescue personnel transported him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in serious condition.
The circumstances leading to the shooting remained unclear Sunday. Authorities had not publicly identified the wounded man, announced a motive or released information describing a possible shooter. No arrest had been reported in the case.
The red four-door Hyundai where the man was found showed evidence of extensive gunfire. Police seized the vehicle as evidence, and a tow truck later removed it from the street as detectives continued their investigation. Authorities had not publicly detailed what evidence was recovered from the vehicle or surrounding area.
The investigation followed another shooting reported nearby a day earlier. At about 4 a.m. Friday, Miami police officers responded to a shooting in Liberty City in which a vehicle was struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported in that incident. Police had not announced that the two shootings were connected.
The area has also been the site of other shootings in recent months. In July, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated gunfire near Northwest 64th Street and Northwest 21st Avenue in the neighboring Gladeview area. A 12-year-old girl who was sitting in a vehicle was wounded in the arm during that shooting.
Earlier this year, a 19-year-old man was fatally wounded in a February shooting near Northwest 51st Street and Northwest 13th Avenue in Liberty City. Authorities have not said that the earlier cases are related to Saturday’s shooting, and each has been investigated as a separate incident based on the information publicly available.
Investigators had released few details by Sunday about what happened before the latest gunfire. Police had not publicly said whether the victim was driving or sitting in the Hyundai when he was shot, whether other people were present, or whether detectives had identified any suspects.
Detectives continued working to determine who fired the shots and what led to the attack. Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers was accepting information from people who wished to provide tips anonymously as the investigation remained active.
