Police arrested an 18-year-old suspect after the late-night shooting in Pleasant Grove, where investigators recovered 15 shell casings.
DALLAS, TX — A man walking his dog in Dallas’ Pleasant Grove neighborhood was shot four times after an unfamiliar man confronted him late Monday, according to police, who later arrested an 18-year-old suspect on an aggravated assault charge.
Dallas police identified the suspect as David Gabriel Ramirez, 18. Police said Ramirez was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail, and no bond had been set when authorities provided the latest information. The victim remained hospitalized, while his dog was taken to Dallas Animal Services.
Officers responded at 10:48 p.m. to the 1900 block of North Prairie Creek Road after receiving a report of a shooting. Police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Officers said the man had been walking his dog when someone he did not know approached him.
According to investigators, the man who approached the victim made a threatening statement and displayed a handgun. The victim tried to run away, but the gunman opened fire, police said. The victim was struck four times before the shooter fled. Investigators recovered 15 shell casings from the scene.
Police said the shooting appeared to be unprovoked and that the victim did not know the person who confronted him. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim or provided a detailed update on his condition beyond saying that he remained in the hospital.
According to an arrest report cited by FOX 4, officers establishing a crime scene noticed Ramirez walking nearby and sweating heavily, as though he had been running. Police said he also matched the description investigators had received of the suspected shooter. Those observations became part of the investigation that led to his arrest.
Witnesses told investigators that Ramirez had been drinking before the shooting and had become extremely hostile toward people at a home in the 1200 block of McGregor Street, according to the arrest report. Witnesses said they had taken a handgun away from him because they were concerned about his behavior. They later returned the weapon after Ramirez came back to the home and threatened to break its windows, according to the report. Those accounts are allegations contained in the investigation and have not been proven in court.
A neighbor told FOX 4 that he heard an initial series of gunshots followed by additional shots and looked outside. The shooting occurred near W.W. Samuell High School, where officers were seen gathering evidence afterward. Police have not publicly announced a motive for the attack.
Ramirez faces an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. The charge is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police said the investigation remains active, and authorities have not released additional information about the victim’s recovery or when his dog may be returned from Dallas Animal Services.
