TUCSON, AZ – Located within the heart of the University of Arizona’s campus, the Arizona-Sonora Hall dormitory became a scene of violence with a man succumbing to a fatal gunshot wound late Sunday night. The incident is currently being pursued by the Tucson Police Department and the University Police as they embark on an active manhunt for the shooting suspect.
Close to 11 p.m., the Tucson Police Department informed the University of Arizona Police Department about a shooting that had taken place near the Arizona-Sonora Hall dorm in the vicinity of Park Avenue and Fourth Street.
Preliminary investigation shows that an argument involving multiple people escalated, resulting in a man shooting the victim at the adjacent volleyball courts. The victim was quickly moved to a car by witnesses, with the intent of transporting him to a hospital. However, the car remained at the scene for emergency crews to arrive.
Upon reaching the scene, responding officers discovered the victim lying next to the car. Despite immediate life-saving attempts by University of Arizona Police Department officers and emergency medical workers, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have identified the deceased victim as a student from Pima Community College.
The shooting suspect remains at large, having fled the scene before police’s arrival. He’s described as a man between the ages of 19 and 25, roughly six feet tall, with dark skin, and likely of Hispanic or Middle Eastern descent. The suspect is alleged to have dark curly hair, facial hair, and was last seen sporting a white short-sleeved T-shirt and tan shorts. Witnesses shared that a small black handgun was used during the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, with the scene of the crime being cordoned off for further examination.
