EL PASO, TX – A police officer from the El Paso Independent School District shot and killed a man in his 50s outside of the campus of Franklin High School in West El Paso, Texas. The incident took place early in the morning before classes began at the school.
Thankfully, no students from the high school were involved in the shooting or injured by the gunfire.
Participants in a cross-country race, who were near the scene of the crime when the incident broke out, were promptly moved to a secure area. Due to the event, classes for the day were canceled.
El Paso ISD, which oversees 95 schools and serves over 60,000 students in West Texas, confirmed that there was no threat to its community, students, or staff. Moreover, it highlighted its collaboration with other agencies in investigating the incident. The school district owns the largest school police department in the region.
While the affected area has been cordoned off for the ongoing investigation, the nearby Coronado High School assured parents and students that it was a “normal school day.” More police surveillance was added in and around the premises.
