Man kills two convenience store clerks over loterry tickets

MESQUITE, TX – Davonta Mathis, the man accused of fatally shooting two convenience store clerks in North Texas, has been arrested and criminally charged. According to police, Mathis confessed to the killings during interrogation, revealing a chilling lack of remorse for his actions.

Mathis is responsible for the death of 60-year-old Muhammad Hussain in Mesquite, followed by the murder of 32-year-old Gopi Dasari in Dallas just over a day later. In his confession, Mathis admitted to using a stolen truck and an illegally purchased gun to carry out the crimes, aiming to steal lottery tickets to finance an apartment.

The arrest warrant affidavit paints a grim picture of the events, indicating that Mathis did not allow his victims any chance to comply with his demands before shooting them. His motive, as stated in the affidavit, was purely robbery-oriented. Mesquite Police Sgt. Curtis Phillip described the nature of the crimes as particularly brutal.

Adding to the severity of the situation, Mathis revealed a disturbing racial motive behind the shooting of Hussain. He told investigators he chose to shoot Hussain immediately upon entering the store due to his ethnic appearance, believing he would not be cooperative.

Further details from the affidavit disclosed that during a police chase, Mathis contemplated suicide but couldn’t locate his gun. This chase ended with his arrest, bringing some closure to the shocking spree of violence.

Mathis’s lack of remorse and the cold premeditation outlined in his confession have left the community and law enforcement deeply shaken. This case continues to develop as legal proceedings against Mathis get underway, with the local community mourning the loss and rallying for justice for the victims.
