Police said a flatbed truck mounted the sidewalk near Canal Street and Bowery, striking three pedestrians Thursday morning.
NEW YORK CITY, NY — A 77-year-old man was killed and two women were injured Thursday after a flatbed truck mounted a sidewalk and struck three pedestrians at Canal Street and Bowery in Manhattan’s Chinatown, according to police.
The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. Sept. 10 near the Manhattan Bridge. Police said the 66-year-old truck driver was traveling westbound from the bridge and attempting to turn toward Bowery when the truck went onto the curb and struck the pedestrians. The three victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. The women, ages 52 and 71, were listed in stable condition.
The truck driver remained at the scene and was later taken into police custody. No charges had been announced in the initial reports after the crash. Police said there was no indication at that stage of the investigation that the collision was intentional.
Authorities had not publicly identified the man who died as of the latest reports. Police said his name was being withheld pending notification of his family. The names of the two injured women also had not been released.
A second vehicle became involved during the crash sequence. Police said a van driven by a 47-year-old man struck the rear of the flatbed truck. The van driver was also injured, according to police. Initial accounts differed on the precise sequence of the vehicle collisions, and investigators had not publicly released a final reconstruction of the crash.
Video and photographs from the scene showed a large flatbed truck carrying stacks of wooden pallets near the intersection. The truck had a damaged windshield and several flattened tires. Police tape blocked part of the roadway while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
The crash occurred at a heavily traveled intersection at the Manhattan Bridge approach, where traffic leaving the bridge feeds into streets used by pedestrians, commercial vehicles and neighborhood traffic. Residents and local officials have raised safety concerns about the area following other serious crashes.
In July 2025, two people were killed nearby after police said the driver of a stolen vehicle lost control near the Manhattan Bridge and struck a cyclist and a pedestrian. That crash prompted calls from victims’ relatives and community members for additional traffic-safety measures around the bridge approach.
Thursday’s crash remained under investigation. Police had not publicly announced a cause, and authorities had not released findings on speed, mechanical problems or other factors that may have contributed to the truck leaving the roadway. Investigators were continuing to determine the sequence of events and whether any charges were warranted.
