Police are investigating how the unidentified man became trapped in the ventilation system at Walter’s Soul Food Cafe.
ATLANTA, GA — An employee arriving at Walter’s Soul Food Cafe on Monday morning found a man dead and wedged in a ventilation system connected to the restaurant’s kitchen, prompting a police investigation into how he got there.
Atlanta police said officers were called about 9 a.m. Sept. 14 to the 300 block of Cleveland Avenue SW after the discovery. The restaurant’s owner told investigators that an employee had found the man stuck in a vent in the kitchen area. Atlanta Fire Rescue personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The man had not been publicly identified as of Monday evening. Authorities also had not determined how he entered the ventilation system, how long he had been there or what caused his death. Police said the circumstances remained under investigation.
Accounts from the scene indicated that the man was lodged in ventilation equipment extending between the restaurant and the roof of the building. Witnesses described seeing part of his body protruding from the HVAC system. Emergency crews worked around the roof and restaurant as investigators examined the scene and the body was removed.
Walter’s Soul Food Cafe is at 394 Cleveland Ave. SW in a strip shopping center near Forrest Hills Drive. The police response drew attention to the building Monday morning as officers and fire personnel worked at the restaurant.
Police said investigators had not found signs pointing to foul play in their initial examination. That assessment does not establish how the man died, and officials had not released information explaining why he was inside the ventilation system.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to determine the cause and manner of death. An autopsy remained pending, and authorities had not announced when the man’s identity would be released.
The investigation remained active Monday. Police had not announced any arrests, suspects or criminal charges, and the circumstances that brought the man to the restaurant’s ventilation system remained unknown.
