ORMOND BEACH, FL – Residents of the Kingston Shores Condominiums in Ormond Beach awoke to chaos Thursday morning as a standoff with police ended in tragedy. The peaceful seaside community was shattered by the sound of gunfire, as a man barricaded inside an Airbnb fired over 200 rounds, according to local authorities.
The suspect, identified as Joseph Defusco, a veteran and convicted felon, was reportedly suffering from a mental health crisis. Deputies were initially called to the scene for a well-being check after Defusco refused to go to the hospital. As the situation escalated, Defusco began shooting indiscriminately at nearby homes and law enforcement officers.
Witnesses described the scene as surreal, with many residents still in their pajamas forced to evacuate amid the chaos. “At first, we thought it was fireworks,” one resident noted, “but soon realized it was much more serious.”
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood recounted the tense standoff, explaining that Defusco was heavily armed and unwilling to negotiate. “Every attempt to communicate was met with gunfire,” Chitwood said. The standoff lasted several hours before authorities were forced to take decisive action.
The confrontation ended with Defusco’s death, but fortunately, no other injuries were reported. Sheriff Chitwood emphasized the priority was ensuring the safety of all deputies and residents, allowing them to return home for Thanksgiving. “Our goal was for everyone to have Thanksgiving dinner safely,” he stated.
The incident, however, disrupted many holiday plans. Some residents chose to cancel gatherings or move them elsewhere, but relief was palpable as the situation concluded without further harm.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting, with deputies still processing the extensive crime scene. Sheriff Chitwood acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting the significant number of shots fired and the extensive damage to the area.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the unexpected violence that disrupted their holiday. Authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the standoff, hoping to provide answers and closure to those affected.
