SAN ANTONIO, TX – A dramatic rescue attempt unfolded at Woodlawn Lake on Wednesday morning when a woman bravely dove into the water to save a drowning man. Despite her efforts and those of others, the man tragically did not survive.
Katrina Mejia was on her usual morning walk when she noticed a group of onlookers by the lake. In the water, a man was struggling to stay afloat. Without hesitation, Mejia sprang into action, recalling her past lifeguard training from a decade ago.
“I didn’t think twice,” Mejia said. “I just acted. I knew I had to do something.”
Mejia quickly removed her shoes and headphones before diving into the lake. As she swam toward the man, memories of her lifeguard days at a local water park resurfaced, guiding her actions.
“I used my swimming skills instinctively,” Mejia explained. “I just wanted to help.”
As she neared the man, she realized the difficulty of the task. His weight became a challenge, and she called out for assistance. Fortunately, a passerby who frequently jogs in the area joined Mejia in her efforts.
Together, they managed to pull the man to shore, where bystanders were already preparing to administer CPR. Emergency services arrived shortly after, taking over the resuscitation attempts.
Despite briefly regaining a pulse, the man later succumbed to his condition at the hospital. Mejia expressed gratitude for the support she received during the rescue attempt.
“It was my faith that kept me going,” Mejia reflected. “And I’m thankful to everyone who helped.”
