Police say the 36-year-old suspect was arrested after investigators reviewed evidence from the luxury Miami apartment building.
MIAMI, FL — A 36-year-old man was arrested Friday night and charged with second-degree murder after police said his mother was fatally stabbed inside a luxury apartment building in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood.
Stefano Cremasco-Cicero was booked into jail after an investigation that began around 4:45 a.m. Friday at Solitair Brickell Apartments, 86 SW Eighth St. Miami police said officers responding to a reported domestic incident went to an apartment on the 47th floor and found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. She died at the scene.
Police later said they believed the victim was Cremasco-Cicero’s mother. She was described as a woman in her late 50s or early 60s who was visiting from Mexico and staying at the apartment. Authorities had not publicly released her name as of early Saturday.
Investigators said surveillance video from the building became part of the evidence in the case. According to an arrest report cited by local news organizations, Cremasco-Cicero was seen on surveillance footage with blood on him and holding a knife. Police also said he had blood on his shoes, clothing and hands when officers encountered him.
Cremasco-Cicero told police that he had been defending himself, according to Local 10. Authorities have not publicly detailed the circumstances surrounding that statement or released information establishing what led to the confrontation. His arrest represents an accusation, and the charge against him has not been proven in court.
Miami Police Officer Kenia Fallat said during the initial investigation that officers found a woman who appeared to have been stabbed multiple times. Police characterized the case as an isolated, domestic-related incident and said there was no broader threat to the public.
The investigation drew a large police presence to the high-rise Friday morning. Detectives examined multiple areas of the building, including the apartment and lobby, and reviewed surveillance footage. Earlier reports said elevators were temporarily affected while officers worked at the scene.
A resident, Zach Carson, told local reporters that he heard noise early Friday and later encountered police activity outside his apartment. He returned inside and eventually used the stairs to leave the building. Other residents expressed surprise at seeing the extensive police response at the luxury residential tower.
Investigators said Cremasco-Cicero called police after the stabbing. He was initially detained while detectives investigated and was arrested later Friday. Police have not publicly announced a motive, and additional details about the events leading to the stabbing remained under investigation.
Cremasco-Cicero remained charged with second-degree murder as the case moved into the criminal court process. Authorities had not announced additional charges or publicly identified the victim by early Saturday.
