Man arrested for shooting girlfriend and her two sons

SOMERS, NY – A man accused of a deadly shooting at a Westchester County apartment complex was apprehended following an intense manhunt that led to school closures and shelter-in-place warnings. Fernando Jiminez, 40, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning, ending the search that had gripped the local community.

Jiminez is alleged to have shot his girlfriend and her two sons late Monday night at an apartment situated behind the Crossroads Plaza on Route 6 in Somers. The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m., resulting in one fatality and two others hospitalized.

The victims include two minors, identified by sources as a 10th-grader and an 8th-grader. The older boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at Westchester Medical Center, while his younger brother remains in critical condition. Their mother, also injured, is reportedly in stable condition. It has been clarified that Jiminez is not the biological father of the boys.

The search for Jiminez had prompted New York State Police to issue county-wide shelter-in-place orders, while schools in the Putnam Valley district were closed as a precaution. By Tuesday morning, Jiminez was located and arrested before noon, easing tensions in the area.

In response to the shooting’s impact, the Somers Central School District canceled all scheduled afterschool activities on Tuesday. A statement on the district’s website highlighted both the security of the schools and the somber mood as reasons for the cancellations, emphasizing respect for the affected family.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities continue to probe the motive behind the shooting. New York State Police are leading efforts to unravel the reasons that led to the violent crime, which has profoundly affected the Somers community.
