DENTON, NC – A North Carolina man faces multiple charges after authorities found an elderly woman living in deplorable conditions with over 40 feral wolf-hybrid dogs. The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Melvin “Sonny” Berry on Monday, charging him with felony domestic elderly abuse/neglect with serious injuries, a misdemeanor local ordinance violation, and 20 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
The investigation began earlier this month when deputies received reports of potential animal cruelty and elder abuse in the Denton area. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the elderly woman had sustained injuries while living in a home overrun by wolf-hybrid dogs. The conditions inside and outside the residence were deemed unfit for human or animal habitation.
Through interviews, observations, and medical evaluations, authorities confirmed the woman’s dire living situation. The dogs, described as unsocial and feral, posed significant health risks. After consulting with medical professionals and veterinarians, officials decided to euthanize the animals to safeguard public health and the well-being of nearby pets.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the decision to euthanize the dogs was not taken lightly but was necessary due to the diseases the animals were exposed to and carrying. The situation raised concerns about the potential spread of these diseases to other pets and people in the community.
Berry is scheduled to appear in Lexington District Court on July 23. The case has sparked discussions about animal welfare and elder care, highlighting the need for vigilance and intervention in similar situations.
