Man Arrested After Firing Gunshots on College Campus

A 24-year-old man from Waterville has been arrested following reports of gunshots fired at a party on the Colby College campus in Maine.

Andrew Gifford of Waterville was treated for head wounds after being assaulted by two non-Colby students at the Alfond Apartments, also known as the “Senior Apartments,” on Saturday morning. In response to the assault, Gifford fired two rounds from a concealed handgun, which struck the wall without causing injury.

Gifford has been charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and his bail has been set at $10,000, with a court date scheduled for June 12th. Interim Police Chief William Bonney praised the responding officers for their professionalism and preparation, noting that the situation could have been much worse.

No Colby students were involved in the incident, although Bonney expressed sympathy for those who had been traumatized by the events. He also emphasized that it was fortunate that no innocent bystanders had been hurt in the altercation.

The incident remains under investigation, and it is unclear at this time what led to the altercation between Gifford and the other non-Colby students.
