Police said the 28-year-old followed the woman for about 20 blocks before attacking her inside a Biscayne Boulevard office building.
MIAMI, FL — A New York man was arrested after Miami police said he followed a 40-year-old woman for nearly 20 blocks before attacking and sexually assaulting her inside an office building where she had gone looking for help.
Eddie Zewayne Bussey, 28, of Yonkers, New York, was arrested Tuesday on a series of felony charges, including kidnapping, attempted sexual battery causing serious personal injury and attempted second-degree murder, according to Miami police and local news reports citing his arrest records. Investigators said surveillance video captured the attack and that DNA evidence collected after the assault helped identify Bussey as a suspect.
Police said the woman had left a nightclub in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood early Friday morning and was walking home because her cellphone battery had died, leaving her unable to arrange a ride. She noticed a man following her near Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 24th Street and crossed the street in an effort to create distance, according to the arrest report. Investigators said the man followed her movements and continued walking behind her.
Fearing for her safety, the woman entered a well-lit office building at 4770 Biscayne Blvd., police said. She took an elevator to the 12th floor and tried to find someone who could help her but was unable to locate anyone. When she returned to the lobby, investigators said, she saw the man had followed her into the building. She then tried another exit, but the door was locked.
Police said surveillance footage showed the man attacking the woman in the lobby before forcing her into a mailroom. Investigators said she was repeatedly struck and choked while trying to escape. The arrest report also describes verbal threats made during the attack. Authorities said the woman was sexually assaulted while being prevented from leaving the area.
The woman eventually escaped and ran to a nearby CVS Pharmacy, where she contacted police, according to investigators. Police said she had visible injuries, including bruising and other trauma, and was taken to the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center for medical care. Authorities have not publicly identified her, consistent with common practices intended to protect people who report sexual assault.
Investigators said evidence collected during the medical examination produced a DNA link to Bussey. Members of a police apprehension team located him Tuesday near Northwest 36th Street and 13th Avenue in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood. According to the arrest report, Bussey told detectives he had been staying with his brother at a short-term rental in Wynwood for about a month.
Police said Bussey initially told investigators that he had walked home and remained there the night of the attack. After detectives showed him a surveillance image from the office building, the report states, he acknowledged being there but said he had entered to charge his phone. Police said he denied sexually assaulting the woman and gave investigators a different account of how the confrontation began. Those statements have not been proven in court.
Authorities also accused Bussey of becoming combative when officers tried to obtain a court-authorized DNA sample. A separate arrest report alleges that he spat at officers, fought with them and damaged an interview room. In addition to the major charges tied to the attack, WSVN reported that Bussey faces counts including burglary of an occupied dwelling, strong-arm robbery, battery by strangulation, victim or witness tampering, indecent exposure and providing a false name after arrest.
WSVN reported that Bussey declined to appear at a bond hearing Wednesday and that a judge found probable cause and ordered him held without bond. Local 10 reported later Wednesday that jail records at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center listed his bond status as “to be set.” No further court schedule or case disposition had been publicly confirmed in the reports reviewed.
