Juvenile charged with murder in shooting death of woman

Police said the victim died at the scene on Northgate Drive as nearby schools briefly locked down.

SAVANNAH, GA — A woman was shot to death Thursday afternoon in a Savannah neighborhood, and police later arrested a male juvenile and charged him with murder, authorities said. The shooting happened in the 1800 block of Northgate Drive, where officers found the victim with gunshot wounds and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The killing rattled residents in a quiet area off East 52nd Street and Skidaway Road, where neighbors said they rarely see serious crime. Police initially released few details while homicide detectives and forensic investigators worked for hours in the street, and nearby schools briefly went into lockdown because of the police presence. By the next day, police said they had located a juvenile suspect near the scene and taken him into custody, though the teen’s identity was not released because of his age.

Officers were dispatched to Northgate Drive at about 2:30 p.m. after reports of a shooting, police said. In early updates, authorities described the case as a homicide investigation and said the victim had been struck multiple times. Officers tried life-saving measures, but she died where she was found, police said. A witness who asked not to be identified told a local TV station that they heard six to seven gunshots and then saw the woman lying in the street. The witness said they called 911 and began CPR, continuing until officers arrived.

Police shut down the 1800 block of Northgate Drive for much of the afternoon as investigators processed the scene and collected evidence. The street reopened around 6:30 p.m., according to reports from the neighborhood. Residents described seeing marked patrol cars, yellow crime-scene tape, and investigators moving through the area. Savannah police have not publicly described a motive, the weapon used, or what led up to the shooting. They also have not released the woman’s name as of the latest update, and authorities have not said whether she lived on Northgate Drive or was visiting the area.

Neighbors said the violence felt sudden in an area they consider close-knit. Karen Grashel, who lives nearby, said she was at work when she got a call telling her someone had been killed outside her home. When she returned, she found her street turned into a crime scene. “You don’t think it is going to happen in your neighborhood,” Grashel said in an interview aired on television. She described the situation as “kind of shocking,” adding that it was “quite disturbing.” Another resident, Austin Pitts, said he arrived home after police were already there and realized the shooting happened right in front of his house. “This is just wild. I would’ve never thought it would be on my road,” Pitts said.

The shooting also briefly affected nearby schools. Myers Middle School and Savannah High School, along with other campuses in the area, went into lockdown for a period of time because of the police activity, according to local reports. School officials described the move as a standard safety step when law enforcement is working close to a campus. Police have said no one else was injured in the shooting, and authorities did not report any continuing threat once officers secured the area.

As investigators worked Thursday, police did not initially say whether they had identified a suspect. In that early window, officers said some key questions remained unanswered, including whether the shooter knew the victim and whether the suspect was still nearby. Those unknowns fueled worry for residents watching the investigation unfold from behind taped-off lines. People who live in the area said they exchanged texts and phone calls to check on each other, while others stayed inside until the road reopened. Several neighbors said they were surprised such a serious crime happened in daylight in front of homes.

On Friday, Savannah police said they arrested a male juvenile in connection with the fatal shooting. Police said officers located the suspect near the scene and took him into custody. The juvenile was charged with murder and transported to the Savannah Regional Youth Detention Center, police said. Authorities did not release the suspect’s name because he is a minor. Police also said the suspect and the victim were not related, but they did not explain what, if any, relationship existed between them. It was not immediately clear whether the teen has an attorney or when he will make an initial court appearance.

The case now moves through both investigative and juvenile court processes. Detectives typically continue interviews, review any available video, and wait for forensic results as they build a timeline of events. Police have not said whether additional arrests are expected or whether they believe anyone else was involved. Authorities also have not said whether the juvenile will face the case entirely in the juvenile system or whether prosecutors will seek to move the case to adult court, a step that can be requested in some serious cases depending on a suspect’s age and other factors. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

Residents said they were left trying to understand what happened on their street and why. Some said they hoped for a quick resolution so the neighborhood could begin to heal, while others said they wanted answers about how a shooting unfolded so close to homes and schools. In interviews recorded at the scene, neighbors repeatedly described the area as normally calm. Pitts, who said he has lived in the neighborhood for years, said he had never seen anything like it there before. Grashel said she had always felt safe and secure in the neighborhood, and said the shooting was upsetting for people who know each other and watch out for each other.

Police asked anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or submit an anonymous tip through the Savannah Police Department mobile app. Authorities said they will release more information as it becomes available, including details about the victim and what led up to the shooting.
