Husband flees to Peru after wife found dead in forest

LANCASTER, CA – Authorities are intensifying their search for a Lancaster man labeled a person of interest in the suspected murder of his wife, 33-year-old Shayla Cabrera. The chilling case unfolds amid the release of unsettling video footage, sparking widespread concern in the community.

The footage shows 36-year-old Jose Cabrera at a Lancaster apartment complex in the early morning. Shayla was last seen by friends and family on August 9 and reported missing on August 12. Subsequently, surveillance captured deputies at the couple’s residence, only to discover Jose had fled to Peru with their three young sons, the family’s country of origin.

On August 16, authorities received a tip leading to a grim discovery in Angeles National Forest—Shayla’s body. The cause of death remains undisclosed. That same day, Peruvian authorities located Jose and the children, placing the boys in protective custody.

Family and friends reveal Shayla endured years of domestic abuse, allegedly at the hands of her husband. They suspect he killed her upon learning she planned to leave him. Shayla reportedly never reported the abuse, fearing repercussions due to her immigrant status.

Friends recall Shayla’s growing unease as Jose demanded her identification documents, including her ID and social security card. She confided in her mother about her desire to leave him, a decision she intended to act on the day she disappeared.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is preparing to file charges, which will initiate the extradition process to bring Jose back to the U.S. to face justice. Meanwhile, the community is rallying in support of Shayla, with a vigil planned at Lancaster City Hall.

As the investigation continues, the case highlights the urgent need for awareness and support for domestic abuse victims, especially those in vulnerable situations.
