Houston man arrested for plotting terrorist attack

HOUSTON, TX – A Houston neighborhood was thrust into the spotlight last week when a man accused of supporting ISIS was arrested, following a comprehensive federal investigation that had been years in the making. The suspect, reportedly claiming he would execute a 9/11-type attack if he had the capability, was taken into custody amid a flurry of FBI activity in a typically quiet apartment complex.

Federal authorities, including the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, disclosed that the individual had been monitored for several years due to suspicions of his involvement with ISIS. Recent actions, however, propelled him to the forefront of local and national security concerns. Witnesses in the area described the scene as unprecedented, with numerous agents present during the arrest of the 28-year-old suspect.

A video recorded by neighbors features the suspect’s mother reacting emotionally as her son was detained. Officials identified the man as Saeed and accused him of extensive support for ISIS. The evidence collected includes communications, recruitment videos, and other ISIS-related propaganda.

According to court filings, Saeed is alleged to have been complicit in plots to assassinate former President George W. Bush and attack military recruitment centers, among other Houston-based targets. Authorities also assert that he provided his home as a sanctuary for ISIS affiliates and expressed ambitions to carry out a massive terror attack if he had the means.

The investigation revealed that Saeed had been engaging with ISIS material online since at least 2017, with a marked increase in activity following the Hamas attack on Israel on August 7, 2023. This incident accelerated his priority status on the national security threat list.

Community members, like Antoine Wade, voiced their surprise and gratitude for the intervention by federal forces. “It’s a reminder of the dangers out there,” Wade remarked, highlighting the need for awareness.

As the federal case advances, no photograph of Saeed has been released, and his legal representation remains uncertain. Should he be convicted, Saeed faces a potential 20-year prison sentence. His detention hearing was slated for late Monday.

This case highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing potential threats and safeguarding the public.
