Homicide Suspect Shot By Police After Executing Wife

Ronald Cross, 75, was arrested in the killing of 65-year-old Patricia Wieber after a chase ended near I-70.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indianapolis police arrested a 75-year-old man accused of killing a woman Thursday night after officers chased him across the city and shot him near Interstate 70, authorities said.

Ronald Cross was arrested in connection with the death of Patricia Wieber, 65, who was shot on North Rural Street near East Washington Street. Police said the homicide case quickly became an officer-involved shooting investigation after officers tracked a suspect vehicle, tried to make a traffic stop and later exchanged gunfire with the man they were seeking.

Medics were called about 8:20 p.m. Thursday, May 28, to the first block of North Rural Street for a report of a person shot. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers found Wieber with gunshot wounds at or near a home, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Officer Tommy Thompson, an IMPD spokesman, said officers learned at the scene that the person accused of shooting her had left the area. Investigators then developed information about a suspect vehicle on Bullock Court, a cul-de-sac in the Southern Oaks subdivision southeast of West Southport Road and Bluff Road.

Officers went to Bullock Court and saw two people leave in the suspected vehicle, police said. At West Southport Road and Bluff Road, officers tried to stop the vehicle. The driver got out and was taken into custody, but police said the passenger moved into the driver’s seat and drove away. Officers continued the pursuit toward the southwest side of Indianapolis. Police said stop sticks were used near South Harding Street and West Morris Street, and SWAT vehicles later struck the fleeing vehicle near I-70 to bring it to a stop. Authorities have not released the name of the other person who was detained during the traffic stop.

The pursuit ended in the 900 to 1000 block of South Harding Street, near the I-70 interchange. Police said Cross fired at officers after the vehicle was forced into a grassy area. At least three officers fired back, striking Cross at least once. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said. A firearm was found at the scene, and another report from police said two guns were recovered. No officers or bystanders were hurt. Body camera and dash camera video captured parts of the incident, authorities said.

Police later identified Cross as the man arrested in connection with Wieber’s killing. Court and police details reported by local media show Cross faces a murder allegation and several other counts, including battery and unlawful carrying of a handgun. Public reporting also described a prior history between Cross and people close to Wieber, including an earlier confrontation at a family gathering. Authorities have not released a full public timeline explaining what led to the shooting on North Rural Street, and the exact motive remained unclear.

The officer-involved shooting is being reviewed by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team. IMPD Internal Affairs also is reviewing the case, and the officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave, which is standard after police shootings. Investigators are expected to review body camera footage, dash camera video, radio traffic, evidence from the homicide scene and evidence from the Harding Street scene. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what formal charges move forward in court.

Family and neighbors gathered after Wieber’s death as the investigation continued. Local reports described her as a steady family presence and said relatives were grieving a sudden killing that began in front of a home and ended miles away with another burst of gunfire. Police have not said whether Wieber and Cross were in a current relationship. Investigators also have not said whether the detained driver will face charges tied to the pursuit or the homicide investigation.

Cross had a court date set for June 1, according to public reporting. As of Sunday, the homicide investigation, the police shooting review and the internal police review remained active.
