Homicide investigation begins after one dead, one injured

Deputies said the case appears isolated, but key details about what happened inside the home remain under investigation.

COVINGTON, WA — The King County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation Friday morning after deputies found one person dead and another injured at a Covington home, drawing a large police response to a residential street.

The case brought major crimes detectives to a neighborhood near 186th Place Southeast, where investigators worked through the day to determine what led to the death. Officials said the injured person was taken to MultiCare Covington Medical Center. Authorities had not released the name of the person who died, the cause of death or the relationship between the people involved.

Deputies were called a little after 7 a.m. Friday to the area near 25835 186th Pl. SE after a report that first came in as a possible stabbing, King County Sheriff’s Office communications manager Brandyn Hull said. The call led to a broad response from sheriff’s deputies, Covington police and other law enforcement. Hull said detectives were still trying to piece together what happened before deputies arrived. “They’re looking into every lead, every piece of information, but exactly what happened and what led up to that is all a part of the investigation at this point,” Hull said.

One person was found dead at the scene, and a second person was taken to the hospital with injuries, officials said. A MultiCare spokesperson said an adult male was in stable condition at MultiCare Covington Medical Center. Investigators did not confirm the nature of his injuries or say whether he lived at the home. The sheriff’s office also had not said whether a weapon was recovered. Officials said the Major Crimes Unit took over the case and expected to remain at the scene for several hours as detectives searched for evidence and interviewed people connected to the home.

The investigation centered on a home near the corner of 186th Place Southeast and Southeast 258th Place, with some nearby roads blocked while police worked. Neighbors told reporters they heard messages that the case may have involved a home invasion, but the sheriff’s office did not use that term and did not confirm that account. Hull said investigators were not ready to describe the events inside the home. Detectives also were working to learn who was inside the house at the time, how they knew one another and whether the person who died had any connection to the injured man.

Several neighbors described the area as a quiet, family focused neighborhood and said the police response was unusual for the block. One neighbor told KIRO 7 that she was shocked because she had lived there for 12 years and considered the area safe. Another neighbor, Kendra Smith, said the family at the home had always seemed kind and involved in the neighborhood. “They’re always outside and involved, kids are always out playing,” Smith said. Neighbors also said three children were taken from the home to a nearby house and did not appear to be hurt.

Authorities did not announce any arrests Friday. The sheriff’s office also did not say whether detectives had identified a suspect or whether anyone was being questioned. Officials said they believed the case was isolated and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. That statement came as police tape and patrol vehicles remained visible in the neighborhood, and residents waited for more information about the death, the injured person and the events that brought deputies to the home.

The King County Sheriff’s Office provides police services in Covington, a city southeast of Seattle. Homicide cases handled by the sheriff’s office typically move from the initial patrol response to the Major Crimes Unit once investigators confirm a death appears suspicious. In this case, officials said detectives were still in the early stage of collecting evidence, checking witness statements and reviewing the scene. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to identify the person who died and determine the cause and manner of death.

The case remained open Friday evening, with no public release of the victim’s name and no confirmed motive. Investigators had not said when they would provide the next update.
