SANDY SPRING, MD – A fatal incident took place on Wednesday morning in Montgomery County, Maryland, when a car accident ended in tragedy for three local teens. The car, carrying the youngsters, collided with a wooden light pole, resulting in the death of one and putting two others in critical condition.
The incident occurred near Norwood Road in Sandy Spring as the car maneuvered a curve at approximately 8 a.m., according to Montgomery County police. The deceased, identified as 17-year-old Sanaa Vil, a high school senior, and the critically injured, a 17-year-old girl and boy, were all students at Sherwood High School.
Sandy Spring residents who live near the dangerous curve on Norwood Road said they have witnessed multiple accidents over the years- including vehicles running off the road.
Local resident Joy Turner expressed her heartbreak at the tragic incident, stating, “It breaks my heart because somebody isn’t going home to their mom.” Turner said she watched as an injured child was loaded into an ambulance.
While police are in the midst of an investigation intending to see if the accident was due to rainy weather or speeding, local residents grieve this loss. Sherwood High School Principal Timothy Britton shared in a letter that Vil was an active member of the Black Student Union and played for the Varsity Girls Basketball Team.
Officials from Montgomery County Public Schools released a statement expressing their sorrow, stating, “We are saddened by the news and are providing support to students, staff, and families affected by this tragic event.”
