Police said the suspect stole the victim’s bags and ran from the East Side stop.
SAN ANTONIO, TX — A man waiting for a bus on the East Side was shot in the foot and robbed Monday morning after a gunman took his bags and ran from the 1200 block of Iowa Street, San Antonio police said.
The shooting was reported around 6:10 a.m. near South New Braunfels Avenue and St. Anthony Avenue, a corridor with homes, small businesses and bus service just east of downtown. Police said the victim was at a bus stop when the robber approached with a handgun. The case remained open Monday, with officers still searching for the gunman and working to determine what happened before the shot was fired.
The victim was waiting at the stop when the armed suspect confronted him, according to police. Investigators said the robber shot the man in the foot, took his bags and fled the area on foot. Police described the suspect as a man wearing all black and said he was believed to still have the gun after leaving the scene. No arrest had been announced Monday. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials did not immediately release his name, age or updated medical condition.
The robbery unfolded during the early morning commute, when riders often gather at stops before sunrise. Police did not say whether other people were standing nearby or whether any witnesses remained at the scene to speak with officers. The precise route the victim planned to take was not released. Investigators also had not said whether the victim and robber knew each other, whether words were exchanged before the shooting or whether surveillance video from nearby homes or businesses had been collected.
The 1200 block of Iowa Street sits on San Antonio’s East Side, not far from South New Braunfels Avenue. The area includes neighborhood streets, transit stops and commercial corners used by drivers, pedestrians and bus riders. VIA Metropolitan Transit provides bus service across the San Antonio region, connecting neighborhoods to jobs, schools, medical care and downtown destinations. Police did not say whether the bus stop was damaged, whether any VIA property was involved or whether transit police were part of the response.
The case is being investigated as an armed robbery and shooting. Officers were expected to review available video, interview the victim and witnesses, and check nearby streets for evidence that could help identify the gunman. Police had not released a detailed suspect description beyond clothing and gender. They also had not said how many bags were taken, what was inside them or whether any shell casing or weapon was recovered near the stop.
The shooting added another violent incident to a busy holiday weekend for San Antonio police, who also investigated other shootings across the city in recent days. Officials did not connect the Iowa Street robbery to any other case. The department released only limited details Monday, leaving key questions unanswered, including whether the robbery was targeted or random and whether the gunman had been seen in the area before the attack.
As of Monday, police had not announced an arrest or released the victim’s identity. The next milestone in the case is the release of any additional suspect description, surveillance images or booking information if an arrest is made.
