Fugitive fires on police in an attempted stop

FORT PIERCE, FL – A routine morning drive turned into a high-speed drama on Interstate 95 near Midway Road, leaving commuters stunned. The incident began when a vehicle pursuit involving a stolen Mitsubishi Outlander erupted into gunfire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The pursuit started after a BOLO alert was issued for the vehicle, driven by a 34-year-old with an outstanding warrant. FHP Trooper Sergeant Jay attempted to pull over the suspect, but the driver fled, prompting a pursuit that ended with a tactical maneuver to stop the car.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the suspect’s reckless driving endangering everyone on the road. “It was terrifying,” said one commuter, who narrowly avoided the unfolding chaos during their drive to work.

The situation escalated when the trooper executed a PIT maneuver, a tactical move used to stop fleeing vehicles. The maneuver succeeded, but the suspect responded by firing shots, heightening the danger for law enforcement and bystanders alike.

FHP officials defended the trooper’s actions, emphasizing the need to neutralize the threat posed by the suspect. “In situations like this, quick decisions are crucial to ensure public safety,” an official commented, highlighting the calculated risks officers face.

The suspect was eventually apprehended and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Remarkably, no one else was injured during the incident, a testament to the swift actions of law enforcement.

As Fort Pierce continues to grow, incidents like these underscore the importance of remaining vigilant. “You never know what’s going to happen on the road,” said another local resident, reflecting on the day’s events.

The Florida Highway Patrol urges drivers to stay aware of their surroundings, especially as the community continues to develop and face new challenges.
