An adult performed CPR before first responders took the boy to a Broward County hospital Saturday evening.
PLANTATION, FL — A 4-year-old boy remained in critical but stable condition Sunday after he was pulled unresponsive from a swimming pool at a Plantation home, police said.
The emergency was reported at about 7:46 p.m. Saturday at a residence in the 4600 block of West Broward Boulevard. An adult at the scene removed the child from the water and began CPR while waiting for emergency crews, according to police.
Plantation Fire Rescue took the boy to Broward Health Medical Center. Authorities described his condition as critical but stable in the latest update released Sunday.
Police did not release the boy’s name. Officials also did not say how long he had been in the water, who found him or what happened before he was discovered in the pool.
No additional details were released about the property or whether other children or adults were near the pool when the emergency occurred. Authorities have not announced whether the incident remains under investigation.
The incident comes during a period of heightened concern about child drownings in Broward County. Other young children have died or suffered serious injuries in water-related incidents in the county this summer.
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Swimming pools are a significant risk for children in that age group.
Broward County operates SWIM Central, a water-safety program that provides swimming instruction and discounted lessons for young children. Plantation also publishes water-safety resources addressing adult supervision, barriers that limit access to pools and emergency preparation.
Police had not released a further update on the boy’s medical condition or additional information about the circumstances of the incident as of Sunday.
