Four-year-old girl killed and officer wounded in shooting

SAINT CLAIR TOWNSHIP, OHIO – A tragic incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon in Saint Clair Township, Ohio, leaving a community in shock. A four-year-old girl was fatally shot inside a dentist’s office, and a police officer was critically injured during a chaotic shootout. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Joseph Como, was pronounced dead following the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

Authorities were initially called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. to respond to reports of a man experiencing a mental health crisis. Upon arrival at Saint Clair Avenue, officers attempted to engage with Como, who unexpectedly opened fire. In the ensuing gun battle, police returned shots, striking Como. Emergency medical services provided immediate care at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

During the confrontation, a Saint Clair Township police officer sustained a head injury and was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital. The officer underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition. Police have asked for continued prayers for the officer’s recovery and for the young girl who tragically lost her life.

The young girl was struck by a stray bullet while inside the dental clinic. Despite being airlifted to a hospital, she could not be saved. The community is mourning her loss, as the incident has left residents reeling.

A nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the rapid escalation, noting that a heavy police presence arrived mere minutes after the initial gunfire. The witness recounted hearing a series of gunshots followed by urgent shouting and sirens.

In the aftermath, the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police Foundation announced it is accepting donations to assist with medical expenses for the injured officer and the family of the deceased child. The identities of the officer and the young girl have not yet been released.

As the investigation continues, authorities have not disclosed whether the bullet that struck the child came from Como’s weapon or was a result of police gunfire. The area was cleared, and roads reopened by around 7:30 p.m., but the impact of the day’s events will be felt for some time.

The community is urged to remain informed as further updates become available. This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of mental health crises and the devastating consequences that can arise.
