BRONX, NY – Four teenagers are facing murder charges following a deadly altercation at a playground in the Bronx. The incident left a 14-year-old boy dead and a 17-year-old injured, both victims of a vicious attack.
The violence erupted at Williamsbridge Oval Playground, where candles now mark the spot of the tragedy. A volatile mix of two groups led to the brutal assault, which included beatings and stabbings. The 14-year-old victim, Angel Mendoza, was struck with a skateboard before being fatally stabbed.
Mendoza’s father expressed deep sorrow, describing his son as a quiet kid who avoided trouble. Despite this, the teenager found himself surrounded by an angry mob. A friend recounted hearing Mendoza insist he had no idea what the attackers wanted.
Police suspect the attack was retaliation for an earlier dispute. Mendoza had moved to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic at age four. Recently, tensions had arisen between him and his father over his choice of friends and his absence from school.
The father urged parents to keep a close watch on their children, lamenting the tragic loss of his son. Mendoza was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital, while the 17-year-old victim, who sustained stab wounds to the abdomen and shoulder, was taken to Montefiore Hospital.
Community members expressed their fears, emphasizing the need for safety, so children can play outside without risking their lives. In response to the incident, the NYPD arrested four teenagers: two 18-year-olds, a 16-year-old, and a 15-year-old. The suspects face charges of murder, manslaughter, gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
