The wounded person was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with injuries police described as not life-threatening.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Fort Lauderdale police investigated a shooting early May 7 near Southwest 15th Avenue and 11th Street that left one person shot in the leg and sent to a hospital, authorities said.
The shooting drew officers to a residential area just off Davie Boulevard at about 4 a.m., when much of the neighborhood was still dark and quiet. Police said the wounded person survived, but investigators released few details about the gunfire, the suspected shooter or what led to the confrontation.
Officers responded to the 1000 block of Southwest 15th Avenue after the shooting was reported, police said. They found a person with a leg wound and began first aid before Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived. The victim was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Police said the victim “declined prosecution” and did not provide a description of the suspected shooter, leaving detectives with few public details as they worked the scene.
Crime scene tape blocked part of the area as investigators searched for evidence near Southwest 15th Avenue and 11th Street. Officers were seen checking the ground and nearby spaces for items that could help show where the gunfire came from and how the shooting unfolded. Authorities did not report any other injuries. No arrest was announced in the hours after the shooting, and police did not release the victim’s name, age or gender.
The neighborhood sits west of downtown Fort Lauderdale and near Davie Boulevard, a busy east-west road that connects residential streets, small businesses and commuter traffic. Early morning shootings often leave detectives dependent on shell casings, surveillance video and witness accounts, especially when victims or bystanders do not give full statements. In this case, police said the wounded person did not provide information about the possible shooter or the events before the gunfire.
Investigators did not say whether the shooting began as an argument, a robbery, a targeted attack or another type of dispute. They also did not say whether more than one person may have been involved. The lack of a suspect description appeared to slow the public side of the case. Police continued to treat the area as an active crime scene while they reviewed what evidence was available.
Family members of the wounded person arrived at the scene after officers had already taped off the area. They appeared emotional before leaving, likely to go to the hospital. Police did not say whether they had spoken with relatives or whether anyone else at the scene gave a statement. The victim’s refusal to pursue prosecution does not automatically end a police investigation, but it can make it harder for detectives to build a case unless other evidence or witnesses support charges.
The case remained under investigation after the victim was hospitalized. Police had not announced charges, identified a suspect or released a motive as of the latest public update.
