Firefighters facing charges after son dies in unsanctioned training

VIRGINIA GARDENS, FL – Two former Miami-Dade firefighters are facing serious legal charges following a tragic training incident that resulted in the death of one of their sons. The unauthorized exercise, which took place in Virginia Gardens last year, has led to manslaughter and culpable negligence charges against Francisco Camero and Rafael Fernandez.

The incident involved a live fire drill that investigators say lacked proper safety measures, ultimately spiraling out of control. The drill was conducted without official sanction, and it ended in the death of 28-year-old Fabian Camero, who aspired to follow in his father’s firefighting footsteps. Both former firefighters were arrested and appeared in court on Friday.

According to court documents, Camero and Fernandez were responsible for a training program aimed at international firefighters. During the exercise, Camero brought along his sons, Fabian and Lorenzo, to gain practical experience. Tragically, the two were left unattended near ignited barrels on the third floor of a structure, which ultimately led to Fabian’s death from smoke inhalation.

A third person, unauthorized to be present at the training, reportedly heard Fabian’s breathing apparatus malfunction before he collapsed. This individual, along with Lorenzo, had to flee the hazardous environment, leaving Fabian behind. Firefighters later discovered him unresponsive, unable to breathe.

In response to the arrests, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava expressed sorrow over the incident and emphasized the county’s commitment to accountability. She underscored the importance of ensuring safety in all operations, a sentiment echoed by the department’s chief.

Investigators noted that the protective gear Fabian wore was outdated and ill-fitting. Moreover, critical breathing equipment and safety alert systems were not functioning correctly, contributing to the fatal outcome.

An attorney for Fernandez described the event as a tragic accident, asserting that the truth of the circumstances will eventually come to light. Investigators also revealed that initial search and rescue efforts were delayed because Fernandez did not disclose that people were still inside the burning structure, which included a woman recording the exercise who was also injured.

As legal proceedings continue, bond has been set for both Camero and Fernandez. Efforts to reach Camero’s attorney for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
