Police are investigating after the 63-year-old man’s clothing, identification, wallet and cash were recovered from a nearby trash can.
RIALTO, CA — A Southern California family is seeking answers after a 63-year-old father was found dead without clothing at a Rialto park, with injuries that police said could have resulted from a fall or a physical confrontation.
Rialto police identified the man as Jose De Jesus Arriaga Loza, a city resident whose body was discovered early Sunday, July 19, at Rialto City Park. Investigators have classified the death as suspicious but have not announced a cause of death or said whether they believe a crime occurred.
The Rialto Police Department received a 911 call at about 5:21 a.m. reporting a deceased man at the park in the 200 block of East San Bernardino Avenue. Responding officers found Loza on the grass in the north-central section of the park, according to a department news release.
Police said Loza’s clothing and personal belongings were found inside a nearby trash can. The recovered items included his wallet, cash and California driver’s license. Investigators said robbery did not appear to have been a factor because his money and other property were recovered.
Officers observed injuries to Loza’s face, police said. The injuries were consistent with either a fall or a physical altercation, but authorities have not determined which explanation is more likely. No arrests have been announced, and police have not released information about Loza’s activities before he was found.
Loza’s son, Juan Jose Arriaga Trejo, said his father worked as a cook and was well regarded by friends and coworkers. Trejo said he did not know of anyone who would have wanted to harm his father.
Trejo described the circumstances as difficult for the family to understand. He said the way his father was found seemed like something a person might hear about in a story but would never expect to happen to a close relative.
Family members remembered Loza as a kind and generous man who put other people before himself. They established an online fundraiser to help pay funeral expenses while asking the community for information that could explain what happened during the hours before his death.
The family hopes surveillance cameras near the park may have recorded Loza or anyone who interacted with him. Authorities have not said whether investigators have obtained useful video or identified witnesses. Police also have not released autopsy findings or a confirmed manner of death.
The Rialto Police Department said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to contact the department. Anonymous information may also be submitted through WeTip. No further details about possible suspects or the circumstances leading to Loza’s death had been released as of Friday.
