Family Member Surrenders After Fatal Houston Shooting

Police said the case will be presented to a Harris County grand jury.

HOUSTON, TX — A 42-year-old man died Wednesday after he was shot multiple times during a confrontation with a family member at a northeast Houston home, police said.

Houston police said officers were called at 12:09 p.m. Wednesday to a shooting in progress in the 6200 block of Fairchild Street, near Wayside Drive and the North Loop East. The shooting drew homicide investigators to a residential street in the Settegast area and left one man dead, one man detained and a witness being interviewed. Officials had not released the names of the people involved as of the latest public updates.

Investigators said officers arrived at the home and found the wounded man near the front door with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders treated him at the scene before he was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he later died. Police said the alleged shooter, a 28-year-old man, was found in the front yard and surrendered without incident. Officers recovered a weapon at the home, police said. Houston police said the two men had a family relationship and lived at the same residence, but officials did not specify how they were related. Authorities said a woman who was at the home witnessed the shooting and remained at the scene as officers began the investigation.

The shooting was first reported as a fight between family members that turned violent. Police have not said what started the argument or whether there had been earlier calls to the home. Investigators also have not said whether anyone else was inside the house when gunfire broke out. The case remained open because police had not publicly identified a motive, released the victim’s name or announced criminal charges. Officers interviewed the 28-year-old man after he surrendered and gathered evidence from the house, including the firearm recovered at the scene. The shooting location sits in northeast Houston, east of Interstate 69 and north of the 610 Loop, in an area with older homes and narrow neighborhood streets.

Police said the case will be presented to a Harris County grand jury, which will decide whether charges should be filed. That step means prosecutors and investigators are expected to review the evidence before a final charging decision is made. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was consulted after the shooting, according to police updates. No court date, charging document or bond information had been released because no charge had been publicly announced. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is expected to confirm the victim’s identity after relatives are notified and to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The shooting brought patrol officers, homicide detectives and emergency crews to Fairchild Street shortly after noon, as neighbors saw police activity around the home. Houston police investigators remained focused on the relationship between the two men, the sequence of the confrontation and the witness account from the woman at the residence. Officials said the person of interest did not resist when officers arrived, which allowed police to secure the scene quickly. No additional injuries were reported. Authorities did not say whether the 28-year-old man was taken to jail, held for questioning or released pending the grand jury review.

The investigation remains active, with no identities released and no charges announced. The next major step is the Harris County grand jury review, though police had not given a date for when the case would be presented.
