The police shooting followed a vehicle chase that ended in a crash near the site of the original domestic violence report.
SIMI VALLEY, CA — A 37-year-old man suspected of domestic battery and elder abuse was fatally shot by police Tuesday after a pursuit ended in a crash in a residential Simi Valley neighborhood, authorities said.
Simi Valley police said officers were first called to the 2500 block of Dusan Street at about 8:15 a.m. following a report of domestic violence. The man had left before officers arrived, but investigators determined there was probable cause to arrest him on suspicion of domestic battery and elder abuse, according to the department.
Police said investigators were told the man was armed with a gun and had threatened to engage officers in a shootout if law enforcement was called. Authorities did not immediately release the man’s name or provide further information about the people involved in the reported domestic violence incident.
Officers found the man driving a white pickup truck near the Simi Valley Town Center several hours later, police said. Authorities attempted to stop him, but he drove away and officers began a pursuit through the city.
The chase returned to the area of the original call on Dusan Street, where the pickup crashed near a motorcycle. Video from the neighborhood showed the truck with heavy front-end damage and a motorcycle lying near the curb.
Police officers arrived directly behind the vehicles and opened fire after leaving their patrol vehicles, according to video obtained by local news organizations. Authorities have not publicly detailed what immediately preceded the shooting, whether the man displayed or fired a weapon, or which officers discharged their guns.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No police officers were injured, the department said. Officials had not announced whether anyone riding the motorcycle was hurt or explained the circumstances leading to the collision.
A neighbor told ABC7 that sirens drew attention to the street before a series of gunshots could be heard. The witness said the sound prompted the family to retreat inside the home. Police remained in the neighborhood as investigators examined the damaged vehicles and shooting scene.
The Simi Valley Police Department and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting. The department’s Professional Standards Bureau will conduct a separate administrative review, and the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave under department policy.
Investigators have not released the suspect’s identity, the names of the officers involved or additional information about any weapon recovered at the scene. The investigation into the domestic violence report, pursuit, crash and fatal shooting remains active.
