Deputy killed during traffic stop, suspect shot dead

ROCKY CREEK, MS – A traffic stop turned fatal on Thursday evening when George County Sheriff’s Deputy, Jeremy Malone, was shot and killed. Subsequently, police chased down, and fatally shot, the unnamed suspect responsible for Malone’s death.

This tragic turn of events began around 5:15 p.m. when Deputy Malone pulled a vehicle over on U.S. Route 98 in Rocky Creek, Mississippi. According to a statement by George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon, the shooting took place outside a Dollar General store.

Following this deadly encounter, a police chase ensued, which ended with the suspect’s death. The pursuit started in George County, stretched through Greene County, and concluded in Perry County on U.S. Route 98 near Beaumont.

Newly elected George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon, in office since earlier this week, asked the community to remember Deputy Malone and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves confirmed Deputy Malone’s death in a social media post and expressed gratitude for law enforcement officials who risk their lives daily in service to their communities.

The Mississippi Department of Investigations will be heading the investigation into both shootings. Over 300 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in Mississippi, as per the Officer Down Memorial Page.
