Officials said the man had been firing a handgun in the Bent Tree subdivision before deputies arrived.
KENDALL COUNTY, TX — Kendall County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed an armed man early Wednesday after a 911 caller reported he was firing a handgun in a Boerne-area neighborhood, officials said.
The shooting brought deputies, Boerne police communications staff and at least one Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle to the Bent Tree subdivision before sunrise. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office said the man was found within minutes of the emergency call, and a spokesperson said no deputies were injured.
The incident began at about 4:55 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, when the Boerne Police Department’s Communications Center received a 911 call from a resident in the Bent Tree subdivision, according to the sheriff’s office. The caller told a dispatcher that a “male subject” was standing in the street “wearing only underwear” and firing a handgun, officials said. While deputies were on the way, the caller also reported that the man “had fired a shot” in the caller’s direction, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies arrived in the neighborhood within minutes and found the suspected shooter in the 100 block of Bent Tree Drive, officials said. The sheriff’s office said another shooting occurred when deputies reached the scene. A Kendall County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson confirmed that at least one deputy fatally shot the man. Officials had not released the man’s name by Wednesday afternoon, and it was not immediately clear whether he fired directly at deputies before they opened fire.
The scene was centered near Bent Tree Drive and Spike Rush Lane, where patrol vehicles were seen in the subdivision after the shooting. The neighborhood is in the Boerne area of Kendall County, northwest of San Antonio. Officials did not report injuries to residents, deputies or other officers. The sheriff’s office did not immediately release the number of deputies who fired, the number of shots fired, the type of handgun recovered or whether body camera video exists from the encounter.
The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remained ongoing Wednesday. A Texas Department of Public Safety patrol vehicle was also seen at the scene, though officials had not released DPS’s role in the investigation by early afternoon. Deputy-involved shootings commonly lead to a review of the deputies’ actions, collection of physical evidence and interviews with officers, witnesses and dispatchers. In this case, officials had not announced any charges, outside investigative findings or a timeline for releasing more information.
The sheriff’s office account left several key questions unanswered. Officials had not said what led the man to be in the street before dawn, whether he lived in the subdivision or nearby, or whether anyone else was with him. They also had not released the 911 audio, any radio traffic or any video from the scene. The strongest account made public Wednesday came from the emergency caller, who told dispatchers the man was firing a handgun and had shot toward the caller before deputies arrived.
By Wednesday afternoon, authorities had confirmed the man was dead and that no deputies were hurt. The next milestone in the case is expected to be the release of the man’s identity and further details on the investigation.
