DeKalb man jailed after woman escapes, history draws scrutiny

Investigators say the suspect faces rape and false imprisonment charges as officials review prior cases.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A woman who said she was held and beaten for four days escaped to a store on Candler Road on Nov. 1, leading police to arrest Bryant L. Brookins at a nearby apartment. He is being held without bond on rape, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, battery and obstruction charges, authorities said.

Relatives and advocates say the case is drawing attention because Brookins has a long record in DeKalb and Fulton counties. The DeKalb district attorney’s office said it cannot discuss the 2025 case and confirmed that more serious counts in a 2012 arrest were not prosecuted, while the Fulton office said it is reviewing older files tied to earlier convictions. The swift arrest after the woman’s escape set off new questions about how prior probation violations and earlier charges were handled and whether warning signs were missed across years of police and court contact.

The mother of the victim said her 37-year-old daughter was attacked inside Brookins’ apartment for four days before she fled to the Candler Road business and sought help. “The beating was so bad,” Sharon Williams said, adding that her daughter faces a long recovery. A community advocate who knew the woman through outreach work said she began recording when she saw officers and bystanders around the victim. “She was so badly beaten that I did not recognize her,” said Rhonda Doucette, who runs A Labor of Love and had counseled the woman earlier. Police took Brookins into custody after the escape and booked him into the DeKalb County jail.

Records reviewed by Channel 2 Action News show Brookins has been arrested or convicted several times since 1999 for offenses including false imprisonment, sexual battery and aggravated assault. In Fulton County in 2001, a jury convicted him of false imprisonment during a rape trial and he separately pleaded guilty to false imprisonment, sexual battery and aggravated assault that year. He received a 10-year sentence with two years to serve and the rest on probation. In 2007, an officer moved to revoke his probation, citing a failure to attend court ordered sex offender counseling and calling him a danger to the community. He was later arrested in another case that year in which a victim decided against prosecution. In DeKalb County in 2012, he was arrested on false imprisonment, aggravated assault, probation violation and terroristic threats. He ultimately received a five year sentence to serve one year on terroristic threats, while other counts were not pursued.

The timeline of prior cases is fueling scrutiny of how supervision and charging decisions were handled. The DeKalb district attorney’s office said it could not comment on the new arrest and said the more serious counts from 2012 were not prosecuted, with Brookins sentenced on two terroristic threats counts. The office did not explain why the other charges were dropped. The Fulton district attorney’s office said it is researching older court records tied to the 2001 cases. A public defender representing Brookins in DeKalb did not respond to questions about his criminal history. After the jail booking in the current case, a defense motion asked a judge to release Brookins on bond, saying he was not a threat to any person or the community. The request was later withdrawn, court staff told the station.

Family members and advocates describe a system marked by repeated arrests followed by short periods in custody and lengthy probation. Williams said her daughter could have been spared if earlier cases had resulted in more prison time. “He should have been locked up a long time ago,” she said. Doucette said someone should answer for how a defendant with such a record was able to prey on women. The victim’s supporters say they are focused on medical and mental recovery and have declined to release her name. Police have not publicly detailed the apartment location beyond DeKalb County and have not said whether any weapons were recovered or whether detectives are probing additional victims. Those questions remained unanswered late this week.

Court records show Brookins is held at the DeKalb County jail without bond as the investigation continues. Prosecutors in DeKalb have not said when they will bring the case before a grand jury. The Fulton district attorney’s office said it is still reviewing old case files. Jail and court dockets did not list a future hearing in the new case as of Friday. Officials said Channel 2 has filed paperwork to place a camera in the courtroom for any bond proceedings, but the defense withdrew its motion. Authorities have not released a timeline for the next update.

Outside the store on Candler Road, shoppers described a chaotic scene with police arriving as employees tried to comfort the woman. Doucette said she approached because she recognized the victim from outreach. Williams said her daughter escaped only when she sensed a fleeting moment to get out. “She is blessed to be alive,” Williams said. Neighbors said they were startled to learn the arrest involved a man who had lived in the area for years, and wondered aloud how long the assaults had gone on before the escape.

Brookins remains jailed in DeKalb County and the investigation is active. Prosecutors have not announced charging decisions beyond the initial counts, and court officials have not set a hearing date. Officials said further information could come early next week if filings are entered into the docket.
