“Days of our Lives” star Drake Hogestyn passes away at 70

LOS ANGELES, CA – In a poignant farewell to a television legend, the entertainment world bids adieu to Drake Hogestyn, the actor whose portrayal of John Black on “Days of our Lives” left an indelible mark on soap opera history. Hogestyn succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Saturday, just a day before his 71st birthday, his departure announced with heavy hearts by the show’s official Instagram.

Hogestyn’s presence as John Black resonated deeply with fans, his performances a testament to his love for acting and his audience. The show’s tribute highlighted his formidable strength and commitment, qualities that endeared him to viewers and co-workers over his nearly 40-year tenure on the show.

Hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn’s journey to acting was as unexpected as it was remarkable. A star athlete at the University of South Florida, he excelled in baseball while pursuing a dual major in microbiology and applied sciences. His initial aspirations to become an oral surgeon were sidelined when the Cardinals and Yankees drafted him in 1976, though injuries soon ended his sports dreams.

The door to acting opened when Hogestyn joined Columbia Pictures’ training program in Los Angeles, leading to his iconic role on “Days of our Lives.” Over his career, he became synonymous with John Black, appearing in over 4,200 episodes and becoming an integral part of the show’s legacy.

Hogestyn’s talents extended beyond the soap opera realm, with roles in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” a guest appearance on “Criminal Minds,” and a performance in the holiday film “Christmas Tree Lane.” His colleagues fondly recall his generosity and passion, both on and off the set.

Among those mourning his loss are Alison Sweeney and Christopher Sean, who shared screen time with Hogestyn and offered moving tributes. They cherished him as a mentor and friend, whose impact on their lives was profound and lasting.

Survived by his wife, Victoria Post, and his children Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben, along with seven grandchildren, Hogestyn’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who loved him. His passing is a significant loss to the television community, leaving a void that will be keenly felt.
