WICHITA, KS – A domestic shooting unfolded outside a southern Kansas elementary school Monday morning, where a husband shot his wife after dropping off their two children for class, according to police.
The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. in front of Cessna Elementary School, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said during a news conference. Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or the victim.
Witnesses reported seeing the woman suffering a gunshot wound to the chest before she ran towards the school for help. Upon arrival, a deputy observed the suspect pointing a gun at the woman’s head. The deputy engaged the suspect, ultimately shooting and arresting him.
“There was a small fight that took place between the deputy and the suspect, and he got him into custody,” Easter explained. “At this point, there’s not been any type of school shooting. There’s not been any kids that are hurt or in danger or anything like that.”
A Lyft driver had dropped the couple off at the school just before the shooting, according to Easter. The driver and other witnesses at the scene have been interviewed by officials.
Both the suspect and the victim were taken to a local hospital for treatment, Easter noted. The school was placed on lockdown during the incident, though no students, teachers, or staff were injured.
“There was no school shooting whatsoever. Unfortunately, sometimes these things manifest around neighborhoods where there’s schools,” Easter commented.
