NEW YORK, NY – A college basketball standout, in town for the NBA Draft, found himself in legal trouble Saturday night. Jeremiah Davenport, who recently played for Arkansas and previously for Cincinnati, was arrested on multiple charges in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood.
Authorities reported that officers stopped Davenport and another individual, detecting a strong odor of marijuana from their vehicle. During the stop, an officer noticed a firearm behind the passenger seat where Davenport was sitting. When asked for identification, Davenport was unable to produce any.
The charges against Davenport include criminal possession of a loaded firearm, possession of an ammunition feeding device, and having tinted windows. The other individual with Davenport was not prosecuted.
Davenport’s legal aid lawyer argued in court that there were significant issues with the search conducted by the police. Despite the charges, Davenport did not comment as he left the jail. He had declared for the NBA Draft in April but was not selected.
Davenport’s performance last season for Arkansas saw him averaging 5 points per game over 31 games. His best collegiate season was with the Cincinnati Bearcats in 2021-22, where he averaged 13.4 points per game in 32 starts.
The arrest adds a layer of complexity to Davenport’s professional aspirations, raising questions about his future in basketball.
