A woman in California has been arrested after allegedly beating a 15-month-old child to death while babysitting, leading investigators to uncover another child who had suffered severe injuries under her care. Heather Greenman, 37, was taken into custody last week and charged with murder, child abuse, and child abuse resulting in death. The investigation began on April 26, 2023, when the Riverside County Coroner’s Office alerted the Beaumont Police Department about the suspicious death of the toddler.
According to the Beaumont Police Department, the child had sustained a severe head injury while in the care of Greenman. On that day, Greenman called 911 and claimed that the child had fallen down and hit their head while running at her home in Beaumont, California. The toddler was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors discovered bleeding in the brain and swelling of the head. Tragically, the child succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead.
During an extensive investigation conducted by the department’s Crime Suppression Unit, multiple search warrants were executed, leading to the discovery of a second victim. The two-year-old child had allegedly suffered severe injuries while under Greenman’s care but had not been previously reported. The child was also taken care of at the family’s home in Beaumont but was not hospitalized at the time.
After reviewing the case, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office decided to charge Greenman with first-degree murder in addition to the initial charges of child abuse and child abuse resulting in death. Greenman was apprehended in Spring View Banning and is currently in custody at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on a $1 million bond.
Investigators have emphasized that the investigation into Greenman is ongoing, and they believe there may be additional victims. They are urging anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the Beaumont Police Department.
