Mark Winters, 76, of Westwood, New Jersey, has been arrested and charged with desecrating human remains and aggravated assault on law enforcement officers. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit launched an investigation with the Westwood Police Department following a welfare check at Winters’ home on February 13.
Upon entering the residence, officers discovered the deceased remains of Joan Winters, 70, who lived there with her brother.
According to reports, Mark Winters became aggressive and assaulted the officers after they discovered his sister’s remains. The autopsy was carried out on February 14, and while the cause and manner of death are pending toxicological testing, the initial investigation suggests that the death was not suspicious.

He has been charged with desecration of human remains. The man was also charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement officers in the second degree after an investigation took place.
