Officials said the 2-year-old was found unresponsive in a backyard pool Sunday and rushed to a Broward County hospital.
NORTH LAUDERDALE, FL — A 2-year-old boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday after he was pulled unresponsive from a swimming pool at a North Lauderdale home, authorities said.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews responded Sunday morning to the 6600 block of Pebble Beach after receiving a report involving a toddler in a residential pool. Investigators have not publicly explained how the child entered the water or how long he had been outside an adult’s direct supervision.
Officials said the boy was found in the deep end of the pool. A family member pulled him from the water and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation before emergency crews arrived, according to local news reports citing first responders. Paramedics continued emergency treatment and took the child to Broward Health Medical Center.
Investigators estimated that the boy may have been underwater for about 15 minutes before he was found. Authorities had not released the evidence supporting that estimate as of Monday afternoon. The child’s name was withheld because he is a minor.
The boy remained in critical condition Monday as detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the near-drowning. Officials had not announced any arrests or allegations of wrongdoing. No additional information about the child’s medical condition or expected recovery had been released.
The incident occurred during a period in which South Florida authorities have responded to several serious or fatal incidents involving children in pools, lakes and other bodies of water. A separate 4-year-old boy died after being pulled from a North Lauderdale swimming pool in June, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
In neighboring Plantation, two young children died in separate lake incidents in early July, local authorities said. Those cases were separate from Sunday’s near-drowning, and officials have not indicated that the incidents were connected.
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death among children ages 1 to 4 in Florida, according to the state Department of Health. Public health agencies describe drowning as a rapid and often quiet event that may occur without the splashing or calls for help commonly shown in movies and television programs.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office investigation remained open Monday. Authorities had not said when further information about the boy’s condition or the events leading to the near-drowning would be released.
