Bomb threat shuts down busy freeway

GREENVILLE, SC – A tense situation unfolded on I-85 yesterday, causing significant disruption and concern among the local community. Authorities were forced to shut down the busy interstate for several hours after a traffic stop led to a bomb threat. The suspect, identified as Amjed Al-Hindi, has since been taken into custody and granted bond.

The incident began when South Carolina Transport Police stopped a tractor-trailer near exit 44 for a missing license plate. The driver, Al-Hindi, informed officers of an explosive device inside the truck, prompting a swift response from SWAT teams and the state’s bomb squad. The area was thoroughly searched and ultimately declared safe, with no bomb found.

This scare comes on the heels of recent events in New Orleans and Las Vegas, adding to the heightened tension. Commuters faced a traffic nightmare as what should have been a routine 30-minute drive stretched into hours. Despite several detours, the congestion persisted until all lanes were reopened around 7:30 p.m.

Al-Hindi appeared before a judge facing charges related to conveying false information and operating an unregistered vehicle. He was issued a $20,000 surety bond for all charges. In court, Al-Hindi had numerous questions about legal proceedings, indicating some confusion about the judicial process.

The truck involved in the incident remains in police custody, with a hold preventing its movement until the investigation concludes. Authorities continue to probe why Al-Hindi, an Illinois resident, was traveling through South Carolina.

Local leaders, including Governor McMaster and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Yvette, praised first responders for their swift actions. Congressman William Timmons also expressed gratitude to law enforcement for ensuring public safety.

As the community grapples with the aftermath, officials urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and cooperation in maintaining safety.
