Basketball tournament shooting leaves one dead, four injured

NEW YORK, NY – A deadly shooting erupted at Haffen Park in the Bronx, leaving one man dead and four others injured as crowds gathered for a basketball tournament. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday evening, as families and friends filled the park for the event in Baychester.

Authorities have confirmed that four individuals are in custody for questioning, though no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives working tirelessly at the 47th Precinct to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

The park, a popular local spot, became a crime scene marked with evidence markers and bullet casings. The tragedy unfolded in broad daylight, disrupting what was meant to be a community gathering.

The victim, a 32-year-old man, was shot in the chest and succumbed to his injuries at Jacoby Hospital. Among the wounded, a 31-year-old man remains in critical condition after being shot in the back. A 17-year-old girl, who was shot in the face, is in stable condition.

The other victims, aged 29 and 42, were also treated for their injuries. This incident comes despite recent reports from the NYPD and Mayor Eric Adams indicating a decline in shootings and homicides across New York City this summer.

Residents of the area, which has seen significant changes and gentrification over the years, expressed shock and concern. One long-time resident noted the neighborhood’s recent peacefulness, making the violent outbreak particularly unsettling.

The shooting follows another recent mass shooting in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, raising questions about the city’s safety.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the sudden violence that has shattered their sense of security.
