HOUSTON, TX – Trust shattered and dreams nearly dashed, a prominent couple from Phoenix narrowly salvaged their dream wedding in Mexico after a Houston-based travel agent allegedly embezzled nearly $500,000 intended for the lavish event. The agent, now facing charges, had been a trusted planner for years, orchestrating luxurious trips for Bob and Lisa Moran, the former CEO of a major pet retail chain and his wife.
Only weeks before their nuptials, the Morans discovered that their funds had vanished, leaving their wedding plans in jeopardy. The venue on Mexico’s Pacific coast was unpaid, and reservations were at risk of cancellation. “I’m still in shock,” Lisa Moran said, reflecting on how their trust was betrayed by someone they considered a dependable partner.
The couple had relied on Sunita Haydow, a travel agent they had worked with for years. Haydow had built a reputable image, even boasting online about being named a top travel specialist. However, as the wedding date approached, it became evident that Haydow had not fulfilled her promises.
Court documents reveal that Haydow allegedly pocketed over $423,000, funds meant to cover the costs of the Morans’ 80-guest wedding. The couple was forced to pay again to ensure their special day went ahead as planned. The situation left them scrambling to secure their reservations and avoid a last-minute disaster.
Adding to their distress, the Morans discovered that their honeymoon arrangements, which were also paid for, had never been booked. “We were victims of a breach of trust,” Bob Moran lamented, emphasizing the emotional and financial toll the ordeal has taken on them.
Houston attorney Rob Wilkins, representing the Morans, has filed a lawsuit against Haydow. Despite an email from Haydow admitting fault, she has not participated in legal proceedings, and the Morans have yet to receive any of the $860,000 a judge awarded them.
The couple’s primary concern now is preventing Haydow from defrauding others. “We wanted to take her off the street,” Bob Moran said, expressing a desire to protect others from similar experiences. The Morans are urging others to be cautious and verify the credibility of those they entrust with their travel arrangements.
Haydow’s whereabouts remain unknown, and there is an active warrant for her arrest. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
