A police officer was severely beaten and had his gun stolen

NEW YORK, NY – In a city where the unexpected often becomes reality, a rookie NYPD officer found himself at the center of a harrowing assault that left him hospitalized. The incident, occurring just steps from his home in the Bronx, highlights a troubling trend of violence against law enforcement officers in the city.

Early on a Saturday morning, the officer, fresh from an overnight shift, was walking home near Westchester Square on Saint Peter’s Avenue. Two men, their identities obscured by masks, launched a surprise attack, ambushing him from both the front and rear. The assault was brutal; one of the attackers, identified as 23-year-old Tiyon Hargrove, was caught on video viciously stomping on the officer’s face, resulting in multiple facial fractures.

The assailants, undeterred by their brazen actions, stole the officer’s service weapon, a Glock 19, along with his wallet and phone while brandishing a knife to his throat. The violent encounter was captured on camera, and the footage has since become a crucial piece of evidence as the investigation unfolds.

Mayor Eric Adams, visibly shaken by the incident, visited the officer at Jacobi Medical Center on Sunday. He condemned the attackers’ actions and vowed that justice would be served. The police commissioner echoed this sentiment, expressing outrage and determination to bring those responsible to justice.

The officer’s family, including his brother-in-law, has been by his side throughout his recovery. Despite being conscious, the officer faces a long road to healing, with multiple surgeries anticipated. His family, along with members of the Bangladeshi community, are rallying in support, hoping for a full recovery.

Community leaders, such as local resident Reza Khan, have expressed their determination to see justice served. “We will find the person responsible,” Khan stated, underscoring the community’s resolve.

The officer, who has been with the NYPD for less than a year, previously worked as a 911 dispatcher. His family and colleagues describe him as dedicated and passionate about his role in law enforcement.

As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The NYPD is committed to ensuring the safety of its officers and the communities they serve, and this incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and community cooperation.
