A man takes hostages in a hospital and shoots multiple responding officers and personnel

YORK, PA – A tragic shooting unfolded at a hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, leaving a police officer dead and several others injured. The incident occurred at UPMC Memorial Hospital, located west of Philadelphia, when a gunman entered the Intensive Care Unit armed with a handgun and zip ties.

The suspect, identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, stormed the hospital’s ICU around 10:30 a.m., taking several staff members hostage. As tensions escalated, Ortiz fired his weapon, injuring a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian. The situation intensified when Ortiz held one staff member at gunpoint and restrained another with zip ties.

Police officers quickly arrived on the scene, attempting to negotiate with Ortiz, who ordered them to keep their distance. Despite the officers’ efforts to defuse the situation, Ortiz continued his assault, leading to a firefight in the hospital hallway. The confrontation ended with Ortiz being shot and killed by police.

Tragically, Officer Andrew Duarte, a veteran of the West York Borough Police Department, lost his life during the exchange. Two other officers sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

The shocking event has left the York community reeling, as residents grapple with the violence that disrupted the quiet town. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for Ortiz’s actions, and investigations are ongoing.

Local law enforcement praised the bravery of the hospital staff and police officers, acknowledging their quick response and courage under duress. “Thanks to their efforts, many lives were saved today,” a police spokesperson noted.

Despite the chaos, no patients at the hospital were harmed, and they continue to receive medical care. The hospital remains operational while authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of Officer Duarte, whose dedication to public service will be remembered. The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of violence and the heroism displayed by first responders in the face of danger.
