Police say the suspect knew both teenage victims and that the deadly early-morning shooting followed an argument.
LANGLEY PARK, MD — A 20-year-old Hyattsville man has been charged with murder after a 13-year-old girl was fatally shot and another teenage girl was critically injured in Langley Park early Tuesday, Prince George’s County police said.
Marcos Melendez-Umanzor is charged in the death of Any Davalos, 13, of Silver Spring, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department. Police also charged him with attempted murder in the shooting of the second girl, who remained hospitalized with critical injuries when authorities announced the arrest Wednesday. Investigators said the suspect and the two victims knew one another and that the shooting stemmed from an argument.
Officers were called to the 8100 block of 15th Avenue at about 1:50 a.m. Nov. 3 for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found both teenage girls suffering from gunshot wounds. Davalos was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police said investigators identified Melendez-Umanzor as the suspect through what the department described as various investigative techniques. Authorities have not publicly detailed the evidence that led detectives to identify him, nor have they explained what the argument was about or described the precise relationship between Melendez-Umanzor and the girls.
Members of the Prince George’s County Police Department Fugitive Unit located and arrested Melendez-Umanzor late Tuesday night, police said. The unit is part of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was placed in the custody of the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.
Melendez-Umanzor faces first- and second-degree murder charges, along with first- and second-degree attempted murder charges and related offenses, according to police. The charges are allegations, and the filing of criminal charges does not establish guilt.
Davalos had previously been reported missing in Montgomery County, according to published reports citing local police. Authorities have not publicly explained the circumstances of her disappearance or how she came to be in Langley Park before the shooting. Prince George’s County police initially said the shooting did not appear to be random before announcing the arrest and saying the three knew one another.
The identity of the surviving teenager has not been released by Prince George’s County police. Authorities also have not publicly disclosed further details about the dispute that preceded the shooting. The homicide investigation remains active, and police have asked anyone with information about the case to contact investigators and reference case number 26-0058632.
As of Wednesday’s police announcement, the second teenage victim remained hospitalized in critical condition and Melendez-Umanzor remained in Department of Corrections custody. Police had not announced any additional arrests in the case.
