DOVER, DE – A young woman, aged 18, tragically lost her life in a shooting incident that took place on the premises of Delaware State University this past Sunday, as confirmed by local authorities.
The Dover police force was alerted to the incident around 1:40 a.m., following reports of gunfire on the university campus. Upon arrival, the officers discovered an 18-year-old female from Wilmington, who was not enrolled at the university, suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper torso. The incident occurred near Warren-Franklin Hall, a residence hall primarily occupied by first-year students.
Emergency medical aid was provided to the victim at the scene before she was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed as authorities are still in the process of notifying her family. There were no additional injuries reported, and a description of the potential suspect remains unavailable.
In response to the incident, the university issued a statement, which was shared by the police, announcing the closure of the campus on Sunday. All scheduled activities were cancelled and no visitations were allowed. The statement also noted an increase in police patrols around the campus.
